About CartagenaExplorer.com

Cartagena Explorer is a travel guide and blog dedicated to covering information on visiting and living in Cartagena as well as other destinations in Colombia.

Who Are We?

Cartagena Explorer is managed by me, Adam McConnaughhay, as a sole proprietorship. I great up in Columbia, South Carolina, and came to Colombia in 2011 when I worked as a volunteer teacher in a tiny town on Barú Island, just south of Cartagena. I moved into Cartagena proper in 2012 and worked as a teacher and eventually an IB Diploma Programme Coordinator, starting to moonlight as a blogger in 2018.

My wife Susana Romero Pinto, Cartagena born and bred, helps with some translating to Spanish, generally looking much better in photos, and remembering to take photos of our food.

You can learn more about me at my about the author page.

History of the Site

I launched Cartagena Explorer during the summer of 2018 after living in Cartagena since 2011.

As a history teacher, I noticed there was not a lot of information online, especially in English, about Cartagena’s fascinating history, and thought there might be an opportunity to write about it in a blog. I was also heavily inspired by the now defunct See Colombia travel blog written by Chris Bell, which I used a lot to plan many of my own adventures in Colombia.

Some of the first articles on the site were about Cartagena’s history, museums, the November festivities that year, and our travel that summer to La Guajira.

Over time the site continued to grow, especially after we took several months to travel to places we had not been in Colombia at the end of 2021 and start of 2022 before we relocated to the United States.

Although we are no longer permanently based in Cartagena, I plan to keep the site updated based on what I hope will be out frequent return visits.

Mission Statement

My mission at Cartagena Explorer is to provide in-depth and practical information for all types of travelers planning to travel to Cartagena and other destinations in Colombia.

I do that by sharing my own personal experiences living in Cartagena and traveling around Colombia extensively for over a decade. This includes information on activities, tours, and excursions as well as tips on accommodations, getting around, and restaurants.

I provide honest reviews and detailed accounts of my own experiences as well as provide my best advice based on research informed by those many years of experience in Cartagena and Colombia.

Please be sure to consult the terms and conditions of the site, the privacy policy, and the disclosure policy.
