La Brioche Cartagena Review – Great Brunch and Burgers

La Brioche is one of the best spots for breakfast or brunch in Cartagena.

The name suggests nothing more than a French pastry shop and cafe, but they have really good food, including some pretty creative dishes.

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy breakfast or brunch in Cartagena, or just a cup of coffee and a pastry, it’s a terrific option. They actually do a good lunch and dinner too.

In fact, I think they have the best gourmet style burger in town.

We’ve eaten here a number of times for breakfast brunch and dinner. Read on for a full review of our most recent visit during our trip to Cartagena in mid-2024.

La Brioche Cartagena Restaurant Review Overview

La Brioche has two locations, one in Cartagena’s Walled City and another in the modern Bocagrande neighborhood. They do have a sort of mini coffee and pastry shop inside the Mall Plaza shopping center too.

We’ve always gone to the one in the Old City. It’s in a good location right by the Universidad de Cartagena and just across from Buena Vida Marisquería, another favorite of ours.

I think my first visit here was actually when some friends were visiting and they stopped in for coffee.

They have a good selection of coffee drinks, and befitting of their name, they have some good pastries too, including some great croissants. I especially like their chocolate and almond croissant.

However, they have a pretty large menu of larger dishes too.

I’ve stopped in here for a mimosa (one of the best in Cartagena) and breakfast a number of times over the years.

We’ve also eaten the burgers here a number of times, and they are one of the best burgers in Cartagena. They have some sandwiches and salads on the menu too that I’m sure are all tasty.

The review below is primarily about our most recent visit in June 2024, but I’ll try to add in some mentions of other visits too.

Our Experience at La Brioche Colombia

The restaurant’s full name is La Brioche Colombia, and we stopped in here for breakfast after doing a photo shoot with our daughter with the wonderful Marina Maldonado (read about our photo shoots with her here).

As I said, we had eaten here before, so it was an easy choice after working up an appetite posing all pretty.

It was crowded, but we were lucky enough to snag a table when we got here. I thought they were pretty accommodating of us having our infant daughter Aaliyah along too.

What We Ordered

I had their house special mimosa, which has a splash of triple sec along with the OJ and bubbly. It was good, but I’m not totally sure it was that much better than just a normal mimosa.

Susana had a milo, which they serve frappe like a milkshake with some extra chocolate sauce. I had a sip and it was very tasty.

Susana ordered the eggs your way, where you can get eggs prepared how you like along with the option to add some ingredients. I think she had cheese, onions, and corn.

There’s a fair number of ingredients to choose from, so there’s a good variety of ways you could get them, making this is a good option for just about anyone.

I had the Costeño Eggs Benedict, which replaces the English muffin with two arepas and has a chipotle mildly spicy hollandaise sauce and some avocado slices.

I really enjoyed them, although I kind of think it should come with butifarra or maybe chorizo instead of bacon.

The bacon was nice and crispy how I like it though!

Eggs Benedict Costeño style!

I’ve had a couple other breakfast dishes and a breakfast sandwich here before, and everything I’ve had has been good. I did almost opt for the French Toast as it sounded really good, and I did see them bring some out to another person and it did look very good indeed.

We actually did stop back in here before my mom left after her visit on this same trip. As tempted as I was by the French Toast, I ended up going with the pancakes served with a fried egg and bacon. It was good.

Susana’s mom also had a tasty arepa de huevo, a classic Cartagena street food, and I my mom did a eggs your way dish.

An interesting presentation for pancakes. I love that crispy bacon though!

Also, as I mentioned before, they also do a great gourmet style burger!

You can tell the meat is really fresh, and I believe they grind it in house. My favorite is the Gaston which comes with a crunchy hash brown.

Service was good on this visit and it has been on our others too. Prices are on the higher end for breakfast in Cartagena, but they aren’t outrageous.

If you go to Brioche, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have over the years!

La Brioche Restaurant in Cartagena Final Verdict

In conclusion, this is a great spot if you’re looking for a nice sit down breakfast or brunch in the Walled City. Here and Epoca are our two favorites for an AM meal in Cartagena. I give La Brioche a slight edge since their menu is larger. Epoca has more options for different coffee preparations though.

And, if you happen to be craving a burger in Cartagena, this is pretty much at the top of my list and the burger here is definitely better than at most of the American style bars and pubs in Cartagena.

I hope you found this review of Restaurant La Brioche in Cartagena useful.

You can find their full menu on their website and check out their Instagram for some delicious looking photos.

If you do go yourself, whether for coffee and pastries, a brunch with mimosas, or a juicy burger, I hope you enjoy it as much as we have. Please let me know in the comments below what you got and what you thought, especially if you got that French Toast!

Cheers and Happy Exploring Eating!
